PC
I’ve found these two as good options for a PC media server. The first is Windows Media Player 11 and the second is Simplecenter.
Theres also many more other programs that will do a fine good job too, such as the tversity application.
Both of these set up guides require that you already have your Playstation 3 connected to your home network as well as your PC and i would also suggest making sure your router is loaded with the new firmwares and any updates for it.
Set up using WMP 11
Open Windows Media Player 11
From the toolbar, select Library then Media Sharing
Check “Share my media”
On the PS3 – Under Video, Photos or Music, select “Scan for media server”
Go back to the PC, and you should see a pop up showing an unknown device trying to connect.
Allow the device, and everything should work all fine and dandy – also remember that for this to work it depends on if you have set up your console on the same network!.
SimpleCenter Setup:
Download Simplecenter from http://www.simplecenter.com/
Install – the basic version, just click next when it asks you to create an account. (you only need basic )
Select your shared media folders and let it scan, for example your “music” folder.
Click next one last time to finish the process.
Check your PS3 and your media server should now be working.
Now you can and should be able to stream, here is a alternate program that i do not use – but it does work great.
http://tversity.com/home - install as usual and follow the steps.
Some filetypes may not play – it all depends how they were encoded – some support 360 better and some support the ps3 better, you will have to make a choice on which you prefer.
FAQ:
The most common question i see via the internet is..
Q: “ I try to search for media servers from my PS3 I get the “no servers”
A: Ensure your ps3 is set up along with your ps3 on the same network, i cannot stress enough how many people do not do this and ensure your ps3 is already working on the network – without these 2 basic functions IT WILL NOT WORK!
